In Cold Blood: The Last to See Them Alive | The New Yorker

The victims, the murderers, the victims, the murderers,...-- this is the pattern throughout the first two of the three parts of In Cold Blood.
His masterpiece, In Cold Blood, which invented a new genre of writing, the "nonfiction novel" - the name itself is at least a paradox and perhaps an oxymoron - came to its highest fruition only through his emotional manipulation of a condemned murderer, with whom he may have fallen in love.

In Cold Blood Study Guide | GradeSaver

In this essay we will be discussing the strengths and weaknesses of In Cold Blood when it delivers facts and the credibility of the work.
Upon hearing of Capote's death, Gore Vidal reportedly quipped, "Good career move." In Capote, which dramatizes the writing of In Cold Blood, the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman recreates his subject's nasal lisp and cavalier humanity with such precision that it becomes distracting, just as Capote himself always did.

Capote never intended for In Cold Blood to be a documentary of the multiple murder that happened in the small town of Holcomb.
Harper Lee lived next door to the cousins Truman Capote came to stay with in her small country town. The Monroeville playmates became, arguably, America's most famous pair of childhood friends. Interestingly, for the first half hour or so of the film, if you went in “blind,” there would be little tip-off that this is a horror thriller. The premise could careen in several directions. Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke), a true-crime writer desperately trying to reclaim the past glory of his decade-old bestseller, moves his family into the home of an unsolved murder in which a whole family was drugged and hung from a tree in the back yard. This is to be the subject of his next book, and he will spend the next weeks and months covering all the bases, including ones that the local cops possibly overlooked, in order to produce — as he wistfully opines — his own In Cold Blood (and how many horror films have the chutzpah to work in a Truman Capote reference, I ask you?). Going in mostly unfamiliar with the material, the mind of this viewer was imagining a possible scenario that the killer is still around and will now try to pull off a twofer — a BOGO, if you will — with this new family (oh, and did I mention that stupid Ellison thought it best not to inform his wife and two children that the home they just purchased was the scene of a grisly unsolved multiple homicide?).

That's why Keener - distant, sullen, extra dry - is the perfect actress to portray the one person who, over and over again in Capote, gives us permission to dislike Truman by dismissing his pathetic egomania and cold brilliance with a few precise words and a lean, accusatory glare.
