The title of this article does everyone a disservice. Auditory processing difficulties have been well known for at least the two + decades that I have worked as a learning specialist and the assessment of phonological awareness is part of every good learning evaluation. Difficulty with the processing of language sounds, whether the result of hard-wiring or of persistent ear infections during the period of phonological acquisition is a recognized subset of language processing difficulties, which have long been recognized as the base of most learning disorders. And yes, it can sometimes look like inattention (why pay attention to something that cannot be processed well or easily), but differential diagnosis is relatively straightforward in this case. One of the disadvantages of creating a special name (and acronym) for this difficulty is that it presupposes that it exists in isolation. The video suggests that Ms. O’Donnell’s son may also be dysnomic, a difficulty with neurological roots, that makes retrieval from memory of specific words much more difficult than average (we all occasionally struggle with retrieval when we are tired or stressed). Dysnomia is arguably an expressive language problem, as opposed to phonological processing difficulties, which are seen to be receptive. Perhaps it would be more useful to suggest a thorough and comprehensive language evaluation when a child exhibits signs of struggle of this nature. That way, we can catch it all and don’t have to further subdivide and subdivide the diagnoses.

I guess huge vocabulary is really the supposed defining difference between this and my April 2009 AUTISM DIAGNOSIS – Amazing, I am soooooo happy one or two judges comments on record about my Huge vocabulary !!! My AUTISM doctor got my April 2009 AUTISM DIAGNOSIS exactly right !!! I don’t have vocabulary deficits like this weird disorder. Also, this new disorder doesn’t seem to have the flashing lights oversensory meltdown issues or aversive smells or stimming or the hypergraphia. I have never seen any savant artists mentioned for the new disorder, either – and I research that a lot.

That’s the challenge for children with auditory processing disorder, a poorly understood syndrome that interferes with the brain’s ability to recognize and interpret sounds. It’s been estimated that 2 to 5 percent of children have the disorder, said , an expert on speech and hearing sciences at Washington State University, and it’s likely that many cases have gone undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Reassuringly, the disorder seems to have little or nothing to do with intelligence. Blake has an encyclopedic knowledge of animals — he once corrected his mother for referring to a puma as a mountain lion. The Westchester child is now a 17-year-old high school student being recruited by top colleges.
